As Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for UC Irvine Health Advancement, J. Christopher (Chris) Smith leads the team’s charge to connect volunteers, alumni, friends, grateful families, corporations and foundations with opportunities across the health enterprise to fulfill their passions for giving.
Chris brings nearly 25 years of university-based fundraising experience to the position, most recently having served as Vice President for Development & Alumni Affairs for the Academic Health Center and President of the UC Health Foundation at the University of Cincinnati. There, he managed all aspects of philanthropy, from designing effective grateful patient programs to instituting large capital campaigns. Under his leadership, philanthropic support for academic medicine increased by 60 percent.
Chris is a certified fundraising executive, with a long history of involvement in community and professional organizations. He has served on committees and in leadership roles with the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council for Advancement in Support of Higher Education, the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
