Class of 2014 leave their mark

Class of 2014
Senior Class Gift funds the installation of a new rock climbing wall at the Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders

The Class of 2014 will be remembered for many things — their commitment to academic excellence (over 6,000 graduates!), their promise to uphold university core values, their pledge to be the leaders of tomorrow, and of course, their memorable and historic commencement with President Barack Obama as their keynote speaker. This year though, the Class of 2014 will be remembered for one other thing: their generosity. A testament to their character and leadership, Class of 2014 graduates not only met but surpassed their fundraising goals for the Senior Class Gift Campaign. A tradition for more than 25 years, senior class gifts have funded several campus landmarks and causes, most recently 2012’s Anteater Emblem on the Newkirk Alumni Center and 2013’s Terrace Stage at the UCI Student Center.

This year, the Class of 2014 chose to support the purchase and installation of a rock climbing wall for the Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Altogether, seniors and their parents donated a grand total of over $26,000 to the Senior Class Gift!

“We are grateful that UCI’s Class of 2014 chose to partner with us for this worthy cause. The installation of a new rock climbing wall extends our mission of providing help and hope to all children and families affected by autism throughout Orange County. Thank you Class of 2014 and congratulations on your accomplishment!” says Joseph H. Donnelly, MD, Clinical Director, the Center for Autism.

With this rock climbing wall, therapists at the center will have the opportunity to integrate exercise treatments into improving a child’s fine motor skills. The wall will strengthen core and abdominal muscles and increase shoulder strength, while teaching coordination and motor planning skills.

A plaque will be displayed onsite proudly honoring the Class of 2014 for their support.
