The University of California, Irvine wishes to commemorate our dear friend, Pat Beckman, who passed away in August.
We remember Pat as a gentle and giving person; an active volunteer and philanthropist; and an effective convener who founded the Orange County Chapter of the ARCS Foundation, which funds graduate fellowships in the sciences. Having earned degrees in both Occupational Therapy and Nursing, and working in those fields for many years, Pat had a special interest in healthcare and nursing, and she served on the leadership council for UC Irvine’s Program in Nursing Science.
She loved nature, hiking, gardening, reading and, most of all, encouraging young people in their pursuit of their scientific education. She shared her knowledge and expertise on many boards of philanthropic organizations and educational institutions, including the Board of Trustees for the UC Irvine Foundation. Pat also served as a director and active board member at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, which has given more than 400 million dollars to various charities and organizations.
Over the years, Pat has left her mark on many areas of the UC Irvine campus and provided a physical legacy for her parents at the UC Irvine Douglas Hospital by naming a suite after them in the Cytology department.
We will miss our dear friend Pat very much, and we are grateful for the wonderful memories we cherish from our many years working with her.
“In my conversations and interactions with Pat she would often tickle my heart with her comments that reflected her joyous nature and love of life “.
